9/11

I still remember where I was when the Twin Towers went down.  I was home, still on summer break from UCSB and my brother Jon shook me awake and told me to watch the TV.  I sat there, even after he left for school watching the images.  It was really too much for me to understand, and probably still, my mind cannot fully comprehend what happened that day.  Tomorrow is the 10 year anniversary of September 11th.  It is amazing that 10 years have passed.  We should all stop and reflect on the events of September 11, 2001.  We should pay our respects for the lives lost and we should be grateful for all the blessings we have in our lives.  Fly a flag, do an act of charity, or just take a moment to reflect.  One particular image will stick with me forever.  I remember watching on the news as NYC firefighters hung an American flag on the rubble of one of the Twin Towers under a sign that read "we will never forget".  I will never forget, nor will I ever cease to be grateful for the sacrifices that others have made for my freedoms.

Into the wild 10K

On Wednesday night Dad ran his first 10K. It was held at Irvine Park on their wilderness trails. The trail started out on blacktop and wandered through Santiago Canyon. He said the hardest part of the trail was sand. He did great. Finished in 82 minutes! Congrats!!!! Next stop Disneyland 5K.

Onions

The other day I had a turkey burger at the Wood Ranch and it was onion packed.  I was a little concerned that the onion-related gas would make for an awkward day at work.  Imagine my relief when I got to work and found that I was scheduled in the Casey-Pin rotation.  I would get to sit by myself while I drove the train!  Yay! So, as I drove Casey Jr., I farted away.  I let 'er rip with reckless abandon.  Last night Casey Jr. was powered by natural gas, not the usual diesel.  And, as a bonus, I served as a "seat-warmer" for the poor souls who had to drive the train after me.

Seriously man, how did the tortoise win the race?

My dog, Doogie Bowser, and I run at the same park everyday.  It is our park based solely on the fact that Doogie has marked every inch of it, top to bottom.  There is also a freakishly fast guy who trains in the same park.  I have never asked what his mile time is, partly because I don’t want to know.  The speed with which he laps me is kind of discouraging.  Today he was doing speed intervals and really flying.  You had to be there to see it.  Usually Doogie chases after people who pass her until she regains the lead, but she didn’t even try with him.  After our run, Doogie and I saw him next to his car and I asked, “Do you run for school or something?”  He said, “No, I’m a professional runner.”  Initially, I was impressed.  A professional runner trains on the same running path as me!  Then, as I was driving home I got a little jealous.  Okay, a lot jealous.  I started thinking: (read these statements in a childish, mocking tone) Oh, look at me.  I’m a professional runner.  I’m awesome and everybody else is so slow and fat.  I know, I know.  He didn’t say any of that.  He didn’t even imply it.  But, I have speed envy.  Then again, the tortoise wins the race, right?  Maybe I will stick with slow and steady.  In reality, it might not win the race, but it definitely finishes it.  And that is good enough for me.
